Map the Alps with Mapillary, HERE, and Garmin

Map coverage in the Alps needs improving. That’s why Mapillary, HERE, and Garmin are offering prizes for mappers who increase map coverage in the given areas. The Alps are visited by over 120 million people annually, so up-to-date maps are important. Here’s how you can help (and how you win one of the prizes!).

For the past couple of years, our partnership with HERE has resulted in a substantial contribution of imagery to the Mapillary platform. Now we are inviting our communities to participate in the Map the Alps challenge to increase mapping coverage in this spectacular area of the world.

The Alps are the largest mountain range in Europe, covering an area of 200,000 square kilometers, and stretching across eight countries. As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, over 120 million people visit annually for winter skiing and summer camping activities. With that many tourists, it is of course important to have reliable maps in this region.

That’s why Mapillary is now making this joint effort with HERE and Garmin to increase map coverage in the region. Until the end of October, the top collectors in the Map the Alps challenge have the chance to win an Amazon voucher of up to €50. To be eligible for a prize, you must have mapped at least 50 km inside one or more of the grids from the six challenge countries.

Each grid contains an area with at least one campsite where better maps are needed, and the size of each grid depends on the number of campsites within it. To find the grid for your chosen country, click the links below and zoom in on the map:

Italy
Switzerland
Germany
Austria
Lichtenstein
France

The Map the Alps winners will be contacted by HERE following the challenge. Here are the prizes that are up for grabs:

1st, 2nd, 3rd place: €50 Amazon voucher*
4th and 5th place: €30 Amazon voucher

*Residents of Italy are also competing for a subscription to the Touring Club, the Italian national tourist organization that gives its members discounts on traveling, events, and activities.

Tips and Tricks The best pictures are taken when the camera is held as still as possible, level with the horizon, and at a consistent angle. We also have a longer list of strategies to make the most out of your mapping adventures.

To leave you with some inspiration, here is a sequence by woazboat from Austria.

Good luck challengers, and happy mapping!
